Optimal dual SSD setup for Razer Blade 16? | Razer Insider (2024)

Hi Ihope my answer is supportive for you ,

Upgrading your Razer Blade 16 with dual drives, a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro for the OS/Apps drive and a 4TB Western Digital BLACK SN850X for game files, is generally a good idea. It allows you to separate your operating system, applications, and games onto different drives, which can provide improved performance and organization.

Using different brands or models of drives for different purposes is perfectly fine and does not pose any issues. You don't necessarily need a matched set of drives unless you specifically require features like RAID configurations or syncing capabilities between the drives.

However, before proceeding with the upgrade, there are a few things you should consider:

  1. Physical Space: Ensure that your Razer Blade 16 has the necessary physical space and additional M.2 slots to accommodate both drives. Verify the specifications and available slots on your laptop before making the purchase.

  2. Compatibility: Check the compatibility of the drives with your laptop's M.2 slots and interface specifications. Ensure that the drives you choose are compatible with your Razer Blade 16 to avoid any compatibility issues.

  3. Power and Cooling: Make sure your laptop's power supply and cooling system can handle the additional drives. Dual drives may consume more power and generate more heat, so it's important to ensure that your laptop can provide adequate power and cooling to maintain optimal performance and prevent overheating.

  4. Data Backup: Prior to the upgrade, backup your important data to an external storage device or cloud storage. This will ensure that you don't lose any data during the installation process or if any unexpected issues arise.

  5. Installation: When installing the new drives, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and ensure that you handle the hardware with care. If you are not comfortable with the installation process, it's recommended to seek professional assistance or consult the Razer support team for guidance.

By considering these factors and taking the necessary precautions, you should be able to successfully upgrade your Razer Blade 16 with dual drives and enjoy the benefits of increased storage capacity and improved performance.

Hi,

So thanks for the response, but I suppose I was hoping for a response from someone who may have already bought a Blade 16 and upgraded their SSDs…Anybody out there have any real world experience (pros and/or cons)to share with this sort of upgrade?

Just FYI to provide closurefor anyone else who might read this. I actually wound up going with dual2TB Samsung 990 Pros because I was concerned that the4TB Western Digital BLACK SN850X would be double-sided and therefore, not fit.It was also double the cost and I did not want to mess with RMAing it if it did not work out. Very pleased with the speed and performance of theSamsung 990 Pros though (after running firmware updates). If anyone else here does opt for a dual SSD configuration involving the Blade 16 and a4TB Western Digital BLACK SN850X, let me know how it goes for you!

Congratulations on your new Razer Blade 16! Upgrading your storage to a dual drive setup sounds like a great idea. Installing a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro as an OS/Apps drive in one M.2 slot and a 4TB Western Digital BLACK SN850X for your game files is definitely a viable option.

Using different drives for specific purposes can provide you with the flexibility and performance you need. There is no inherent issue with mixing different drives in terms of compatibility or functionality. As long as the drives are compatible with your Razer Blade 16 and fit properly in the available slots, you should be good to go.

However, keep in mind factors such as cost, performance requirements, and personal preferences. If having a matched set of drives is important to you, it might be worth considering. Ultimately, it depends on your specific needs and priorities.

I have today put a Crucial CT4000P3SSD8 in my Razer Blade 16 and had no problem as this 4TB drive is single sided. i.e. it is thinner than most SSD’s and so you could have two 4TB SSD’s in the laptop. I currently have a 2TB drive for the OS and a 4TB for everything else.
Hope this helps.

What is the max per slot? Was debating on getting at least 1 8tb drive for games etc.. and the main either 8tb or 4tb.

Upgrading my Razer Blade's storage is on my to-do list, and this guide is a lifesaver! Going with the Samsung 990 Pro for the OS is a no-brainer, but I'm torn on the second drive. While the WD BLACK SN850X screams speed, I'm wondering if there might be a more budget-friendly option that still keeps things snappy.

What have other Blade owners out there found success with? Throwing in https://starla.uk/ for some additional upgrade inspiration.

I may know a guy who knows a guy - who heard from a little bird - that there could be a Razer Blade 16 2023 laptop out there that has two SSDs installed currently. One is a Gen 5 Crucial T7052TB & the other is a Gen 5 Crucial 4TB T700 which I believe are both double sided?

And both installed together work perfectly. Does the OS installed SSD better on top or on the bottom though?

Anyone upgraded razor 16 2024, ssd and ram? If so which one u got? I wanted to upgrade to 64gb ram and at least 2tb ssd.

There is a 1tb ssd now in the laptop and I was considering getting another one of 2tb. They don't need to be the same right?
