Did you know that the original name for Rasengan was supposed to be “Halo Frozen Dessert Hair Whorl Jiraiya Twin Formula Sphere?” Yes, it was confirmed, as the creator Minato wanted to pay tribute to his sensei Jiraiya. But luckily, his wife Kushina came up with the idea of calling this cool technique Rasengan. Undoubtedly, it’s one of the most powerful Jutsu to have ever been created in the Naruto universe. From then on, his son Naruto and his grandson Boruto added their spin to the technique and invented several Rasengan versions that were powerful and unique in their own way. Keep reading to learn about all the types of Rasengan in the Naruto and Boruto-verse.

Spoiler Warning:This article contains spoilers about the different types of Rasengan in Naruto and Boruto. We suggest watching the Naruto and Boruto anime or reading the manga first to avoid ruining the intended experience.
We have listed down all of the Rasengan types as seen in the Naruto and Boruto series now. Here they are:
1. Rasengan
The first type we saw in Naruto was the regular Rasengan, the most basic type of Rasengan. After Jiraiya taught Naruto the three basic steps to form a Rasengan, we first saw Naruto using it against Kabuto. This showcased how powerful the simple Rasengan is, and from then on, Naruto kept developing it into a more powerful jutsu.
This simple Rasengan technique was passed down from Minato to many ninjas, including his son Naruto, Konohamaru, and grandson Boruto. Jiraiya and even Sasuke also said that Rasengan was superior to Chidori.
2. Vermillion Rasengan
This version of Rasengan is also popularly known as the Demon Fox Rasengan or the Nine-Tails Rasengan because it is fueled by the Nine-Tails chakra when Naruto is in his one-tailed form.
Due to his one-tailed form, there is also no need for Naruto’s clone to come in and help him. More importantly, this Rasengan is more powerful than the basic one. This is the only other type we saw in the classic Naruto before the time skip. The upcoming versions are all that were shown after the time-skip.
3. Sage Technique: Rasengan
When Naruto enters into sage mode, he can make big use of his Senjutsu. This can be applied to his regular Rasengan to develop a more powerful version. This was the first step to him discovering that he could apply Senjutsu to existing techniques in his arsenal.
Thus, he went on to apply sage art in many of the already powerful Rasengan techniques. They are all mentioned below which can give a better understanding of how this works.
4. Spiralling Serial Spheres
The Spiralling Serial Spheres, also known as Rasengan Barrage or Twin Rasengan, is a different use of the technique. Instead of creating just one Rasengan in one hand, Naruto creates one in each hand. As a result, he can cause destruction using the twin Rasengans in the palm of his hand. There is a variation of this form as well, which we have explained below.
5. Sage Technique: Spiralling Serial Spheres
This one is a variation of the regular Spiralling Serial Spheres. It is the same concept as above, but I believe you can already tell how it’s different. Naruto is developing the twin Rasengans in sage mode in this section. Thanks to Senjutsu, the overall power level of the Rasengans is increased, and it results in much stronger blows to the enemy.
6. Big Ball Rasengan
As the name implies, this type is a much stronger and bigger version of the Rasengan. Developing a bigger and stronger Resengan than the regular one requires a lot of chakra. Thankfully, Naruto had a tank full of chakra, which he made complete use of by developing this Big Ball Rasengan.
This was lethal to the core even though Naruto discovered it accidentally. There is an even stronger variant of it, which we mention right below.
7. Sage Art: Big Ball Rasengan
This is the same Big Ball Rasengan but developed under the influence of Senjutsu when Naruto is in sage mode. The sage mode enhances the Rasengans by giving them a huge buff. And that’s the same case here as Naruto can use one of his shadow clones to make two big Rasengan balls boosted by his sage mode, resulting in mass destruction, as we saw in the Pain arc in Naruto.
8. Big Ball – Spiral Absorption Sphere
This is a big-brain move from Naruto as he was able to make the Big Ball Rasengan technique even better. There is always a possibility of your target escaping or your Rasengan missing the target. So, while in his nine-tails mode, Naruto uses his chakra arms to create a Big Ball Rasengan at first.
And then, with his extra chakra arms, he grabs the enemies and forces them against the Rasengan, more like them getting absorbed into it, hence, the absorption sphere name. Now, you can see how powerful this technique is as there is no escape if one gets caught.
9. Big Ball – Spiralling Serial Zone Spheres
Just when we thought Naruto couldn’t make better use of Big Ball Rasengan than Spiral Absorption Sphere, he came up with yet another brilliant idea – Spiralling Serial Zone Spheres. So, what he does in this technique is that he first creates tons of clones using his signature Multiple Shadow Clone technique. Then, he develops numerous Big Ball Rasengans with these clones and they all slam their Rasengans into the target, basically obliterating anyone.
10. Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan
As the name suggests, this is the much bigger version of the already big ball Rasengan. The larger size includes more power compared to all other versions. As you might have predicted already, this type requires a lot more chakra than the regular big ball type.
The user has to be overflowing with chakra energy to execute this technique. Therefore, Naruto was able to become familiar with this technique over time, and he was even able to use it single-handedly in the Boruto series.
11. Sage Art: Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan
Like all the other sage art-influenced Rasengans, Naruto also infused it with the existing Ultra Big Ball technique. This enhanced the Rasengan’s power to a superior level, and it acted like a ticking bomb that was capable of destroying a mountain. We already saw the full power of this technique, when it pierced through the gigantic God’s tree in the anime. We also saw Jiraiya use this against one of the six Pains.
12. Sage Art: Many Ultra-Big Ball Spiralling Serial Spheres
One Big Ball Rasengan is enough to do tons of damage. So, how about creating tons of ultra-big ball rasengans? Yes! Naruto came up with this mind-boggling technique against Kurama, the Nine Tails. He first created numerous shadow clones wielding a Rasengan. Then, he switched to sage mode and enhanced all the Rasengan into ultra-big ball rasengans. So, he now had multiple gigantic ultra-big ball rasengans at his disposal, which could vanquish anything in front.
13. Wind Release: Rasengan
The wind release Rasengan technique’s concept is simple. The creator of Rasengan, Minato always wanted to add his nature transformation into the technique, but he couldn’t because of his untimely demise. However, his son Naruto was able to achieve this by adding his wind transformation to the Rasengan.
This technique was further adopted and enhanced as Konohamaru and Boruto were able to incorporate their nature transformations into it. This resulted in many powerful Rasengan, which looked unique in their own way. The shuriken variation, air current variation, and ring variation of wind release: Rasengan can be seen above. The highlight of this technique is that the Rasengan can be thrown, unlike the other types.
14. Wind Release: Rasenshuriken
After Naruto discovered the wind release Rasengan, he immediately went on to discover a bigger and much stronger variant. This was the most popular Rasenshuriken technique in the series.
Naruto made use of his clones to handle each part of the technique, from containing the chakra to adding the spinning nature to it brilliantly. As a result, it took the shape of a Shuriken, earning the title of Rasenshurken.
This is a powerful type of Rasengan that could be thrown to destroy opponents. Naruto was further able to use two or more Rasenshuriken during sage mode. In his final nine-tails form, he could use multiple Rasenshurikens without breaking any sweat. Also, he could creature miniature versions of this Rasenshuriken which is said to be the most powerful form of it.
15. Planetary Rasengan
When Naruto went into Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, he invented a new planetary technique that could crush even the mightiest Shinobis during the fourth ninja war. So what he did was, he created a big rasengan and surrounded it with small rasengans like a moon orbiting around a planet.
Hence, it was called the Planetary rasengan and the small ones revolve around the big ones creating a vortex. When in contact with this superior type of Rasengan, no one can hold against it and need a massive time to recover.
16. Tailed Beast Rasengan
Out of all the Rasengans, this Rasengan called the Tailed Beast Rasengan is incomplete. Naruto was able to amazingly come up with this idea and was left untouched after some tries. In his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, Naruto used the chakra arms to create a Rasengan (substitute for the tailed beast ball), which is a lot heavier than the other ones.
As Naruto was able to create the Super Mini-Tailed Beast Ball later in the war, he completely ruled out this type of Rasengan and didn’t completely perfect it.
17. Sage Art: Magnet Release Rasengan
While in his Six Paths Sage mode, Naruto was able to combine two of the most interesting and powerful techniques, resulting in the birth of one of the most Overpowered Rasengan of all time.
Naruto combined his Rasengan with Shukaku’s (one-tail) magnet release, thereby, developing the Magnet Release Rasengan. So, what’s so special about this is that after coming into contact with the target, the target becomes helpless like they are paralyzed as the markings cover their whole body.
18. Six Paths: Ultra-Big Ball Rasenshuriken
This is one of the OP techniques that was discovered by Naruto to counter Sasuke’s powers. In his Six Paths Sage Mode, Naruto was able to create clones of this Kurama-incorporated form and combine these clones into one by using Six Paths Senjutsu.
With multiple hands, he created one Ultra-Big Ball Rasenshuriken in one hand and a Tailed Beast Ball Rasenshuriken in another hand. This technique’s destructive power is just unimaginable!
19. Gentle Step Spiralling Twin Lion Fists
Naruto, along with his wife Hinata, came up with a new Rasengan by combining their two extreme techniques. By combining his Rasengan with Hinata’s Eight Trigrams Twin Lions Crumbling Attack, they successfully created the Gentle Step Spiralling Twin Lion Fists technique.
This is yet another most OP techniques in the history of Naruto. This technique was so overpowered that it completely obliterated Tenseigan and that can be seen in The Last: Naruto the Movie, a canon movie by the way. 20. Vanishing Rasengan
That’s all about the different types of Rasengan in Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. Now let’s see what Boruto has in store for us in terms of Rasengans:
We have had countless versions of Rasengan developed by Naruto, isn’t it? And now his son Boruto carries forward the legacy, creating his versions of Rasengan. The first one he came up with is the Vanishing Rasengan.
As the title implies, it’s a Rasengan that can disappear into thin air, i.e. it can become invisible yet it can hit its target. This is a great technique that can catch enemies off guard and deal huge damage to them.
21. Rasengan Unison
This is more of a cooperation Jutsu than all the other types of Rasengan. When two persons activate their Kāma, they can now streamline their energy to their partner (like lending a helping hand) and increase the prime aspects of a Rasengan, which are the power and size. As there is twice the energy now, Rasengan Unison is capable of wrecking anyone against them.
22. Compression Rasengan
As the name implies, it is indeed a compressed version of Rasengan. But if it is compressed, won’t that reduce its potency and how useful it is anyway, right? But let me tell you the special use of this type of Rasengan.
Boruto is the creator of this Jutsu, so let’s how it was made possible. He compressed the Rasengan to its endpoint by simultaneously generating it in one hand and condensing it via the other hand.
Boruto was successfully able to condense the Rasengan, and it’s considered to be a non-lethal attack against solid defenses. But the power it generates is capable of shaking and knocking them out. This is also a slightly risky technique to pull off as it can end up hurting the user himself.
23. Spiralling Rasengan Bullet
This is a powerful variant of the compressed Rasengan we saw above. From its name, I am sure you must have guessed how this Rasengan is made. The user can compress their Rasengan to resemble a bullet.
And just like how we imitate shooting with a two-finger gun, the user can shoot this mini Rasengan at their target in the same way. The bullet Rasengan after getting launched has a great penetrating force that can knock the victim to the ground.
24. Super-Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan
We have seen the ultra-big ball Rasengan in the Naruto series, and there is a much more superior version for it as well. Naruto keeps expanding Rasengan’s size to invent more techniques. So, the user here creates a gigantic Rasengan equal to that of a big asteroid and on its impact, the whole thing leaves a massive crater after destroying everything within its range.
25. Deep Crimson Spiral
We have seen our protagonists create a Rasengan, but this time we saw the villain create one for the first time in the Boruto series. Momoshiki releases a Rasengan by amplifying the chakra to make it larger and more crimson with the powers of his Rinnegan.
You can see how massive this Rasengan is, which is almost equal to the super-ultra-big-ball version. Furthermore, it had a deep crimson color rather than the typical blue, which was eye-catching.
26. Parent and Child Rasengan
The Parent and Child Rasengan is an ultra-overpowered Rasengan technique that has thrown off powerful villains like Obito, Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki, and many more. So, as the name intends both the parent and son combine their powerful rasengans into one and it results in this big globe-like rasengan. This was done by Minato and Naruto at first during the fourth Ninja War and then by Naruto and Boruto later against Momoshiki.
When a parent and child sum up their rasengans, the output is unimaginable and can transcend any barrier to deliver an overpowered blow to the opponent. It’s a big trump card they can pull off at any time but since it’s a cooperation jutsu, it requires both parent and child to be present together at the same time.
27. Rasengan Uzuhiko
The brand-new Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is one of the best ongoing releases right now. It truly is the perfect comeback we fans wanted, and we are enjoying every minute of it. Manga chapter 2 revealed that Boruto has a new technique in his arsenal, which is a new type of Rasengan called “Uzuhiko” (vortex).
As detailed in our Rasengan Uzuhiko explainer, Uzuhiko literally translates to Spiralling Sphere and has been derived from the God of Wind, Shinatsuhiko, in Japanese mythology. Apart from chakra, it was revealed that this type of Rasengan derives its powers from planetary motion and leaves the enemy disoriented once it hits them
That’s everything you need to know about all the different types of Rasengans shown in the Naruto and the Boruto series so far. We hope we were able to explain every type of Rasengan clearly in this guide So, tell us your favorite type of Rasengan in the comments below.
